Navigating Retirement: The Unique Needs of the LGBT+ Community

Happy couple

There are two main reasons people tell us they contact an LGBT+ focussed adviser.

  • Invariably, the first is that financial planning involves sharing personal information, and people want to ensure they do that with someone they are comfortable with.

  • The second is that they want to speak with someone who will understand their lifestyle and unique needs.

There are a number of key themes that come from our discussions:

Differing Goals

Every situation is unique. The LGBT+ community are more likely to remain single or unmarried, and without children. This is changing, yet a large proportion of people we speak to tell us that they are focussed on enjoying their retirement rather than having money left over to leave a legacy.

Blended Families

A significant number of people only become comfortable in who they are well into their 20s, 30s, or indeed later. There are often previous marriages, and perhaps children from past relationships. People often come into new relationships later in life, and may come with very different financial positions. This can all be difficult to navigate with thought and perceived fairness.

Healthcare

We all have a higher chance of needing healthcare intervention as we get older, but with there being a lower likelihood of children, and some people within the LGBT+ community still sadly becoming estranged from families, planning who may take health and financial decisions for you in later life can have added complexity.
